Six Breaths of the Circle

Six Ink drawings by Anika Kuntze

Ink works on paper – 18″x24″

“Six Breaths of the Circle” is a series of six individual black and white ink drawings, each sized 18” x 24”, that together form a complete circular composition when displayed in sequence. Rooted in Zen Buddhist philosophy, the series explores the Enso, or the Zen circle — a timeless symbol of enlightenment, emptiness, unity, and the beauty of imperfection.

Each drawing represents a phase in the continuous breath of being, reflecting the cycle of existence through movement, stillness, and return. The full installation embodies the wholeness of life’s impermanence, where each piece stands alone in quiet strength yet only finds completion in collective harmony.

“In drawing the circle, I do not aim for perfection, but presence. Each small circle is a meditation — a breath drawn, released, and returned to emptiness. The six drawings are six breaths, together forming a moment of wholeness that is always becoming.”

Installation Concept

Displayed in sequence along a wall or circular arrangement, the six drawings collectively form a complete Enso approximately 72” in diameter when viewed as one continuous composition. Each piece invites contemplation both as an individual expression and as part of the total circle — mirroring the Buddhist understanding that the whole exists within each part.
